Hunt For Perfection

Have you ever looked at an empty notebook and felt, “Wow, that looks pretty?”. The beauty of a new book. The beauty of a blank page. Or maybe it’s just me who is weird.

There are brilliant books that you only want to fill with things that hold meaning. Words or sketches that make it more beautiful.

I once bought such a sketchbook. The sheet was handmade and had a unique texture. I was into pencil shading back then and, the texture added an extra layer to my sketches. I started with the second page of the book and left the first one empty.

I wanted a perfect first page, one that would define the book and the sketches that followed. I am not an expert artist. I draw to relax and to feel the happiness that comes from a completed piece. I drew many in that book, many sketches that made me happy, and some that surprised me by being better than expected.

But I never felt any to be perfect enough for the first page. There was always something lacking. There was always some better sketch that I could reserve for the first page. So I went on sketching, But the first page was still blank.

Soon I finished all the pages in the book, But the first page was still blank.
I showed it off to my friends and family, But the first page was still blank.
It has been three years since then, But the first page is still blank.
I never found my perfect sketch.

Perfect by its definition is: “being entirely without fault or defect.” What or who then can be perfect? Is it not futile to search for it?

And so, my hunt for perfection remained incomplete and will always be.
